Tomorrow the high school will be participating in a nation wide Day of Silence. Those who wish to participate will take a vow of silence for the entire school day in honor of those oppressed by discrimination, racism, hate. The day is intended as a way to experience life in someone else’s shoes – to learn what it feels for those who are silenced just for being themselves. Please remember to wear white t-shirts as a way to see who is taking the vow of silence and to symbolize the unity for a day without hate. For safety or educational purposes, students or staff may need to break the silence or choose not to participate. At the end of the day, those who have participated in the event will be released a few minutes early before the bell to the commons to break the silence together. Please join us tomorrow and see if you can sacrifice your voice for just one day for someone who has no other choice but to be silent. Remember, sometimes the biggest statement is silence.

If for some unknown reason we do not have school tomorrow – we will observe the Day of Silence on Tuesday, April 21.

And now a word from our PeaceJam group:
Who Am I? This girl grew up in a happy home with one elder sister. Her mother stayed at home and her father worked as a local banker. As she grew older the family came into hard economic times, in addition to the restrictions their government was placing on their family. Her father moved away to try to find work while this girl and her sister lived with their grandmother. As time passed she and her family were forced into confinement, yet her story of resilience still lives on today.
The answer to yesterday’s question was Martin Luther King Jr.

As many of you may already know, on Friday the high school will be participating in a nation-wide Day of Silence. On this day everyone is invited to take a vow of silence for those muted by bullying, racism, hate, and discrimination. We will also be wearing white t-shirts as a concrete way to visually see who’s participating in this day without day. PeaceJam is holding this event as a way to experience what it feels like being oppressed. It is a way to sacrifice something we all use everyday as a means for communication and relating to people -because the oppressed are often never heard. From the abused wife, to the black man applying for a job from a racist employer, to a gay student dodging dirty glances in the hallway, to the small student being picked on by a bully, every one of them has had their voices silenced by racism, discrimination, or hate. So here is your chance to show that you care - that you want everyone to live in world without hate. On Friday please join us in taking a vow of silence and wearing white, but also remember to respect those who do not wish to participate. For safety or educational reasons, the silence may need to be broken. At the end of the day on Friday, those who have participated in the event will be released a few minutes early before the bell to the commons to break the silence together. Please join us on Friday and give yourself the challenge of being silent for the entire day as a symbol for those who have no other choice but to be silent. Thank You.

And now a word from our PeaceJam group:
Who Am I? This man was an excellent student in school; he skipped grades in both elementary school and high school. He enjoyed reading books, singing, riding a bicycle, and playing football and baseball. He spent many hours at his father's church, listening to him preach and singing in the choir. He entered Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, when he was only 15 years old.
The answer to yesterday’s question was Mother Theresa.

Who Am I? This woman was born into a simple home with an elder sister and brother. She had an encouraging mother and her father worked as a carpenter. He was an activist and one day retuned home and died from poisoning. From that point on her mother took care of her. At age 12 she knew her life’s calling and pursued becoming a nun, which she achieved after moving.
Hint: Ms. Wendy admires this woman a lot and can be “seen” quoting her words!

And now a word from our PeaceJam group:
This man as a child was scared of snakes and the dark. He was an average everyday student at an all boys’ school with three older brothers. At a young age he learned to love religion as he listened to his father’s discussions with friends of numerous faiths. This man was married at 14 after being betrothed for 7 years. The couple had their first son a year later, but he did not survive. However, this man and his wife had four more healthy children. By the time he turned 20 his parents had both passed away. He then went on to get a degree in law.
